We are pleased to announce the launch of Satoshi SOMEYA’s solo exhibition “Uragaeritainotameni” (For the longing to be inside-out). It is going to be our first opportunity to hold his solo exhibition at imura art gallery kyoto in 2 years.
SOMEYA has completed the Ph.D. program without dissertation at Kyoto City University of Arts this spring. He has been particularly spotlighted recent years that he attended exhibitions of “The Power of Decoration – A viewpoint on Contemporary Kogei,” (The National Museum of Modern Art (Craft gallery), Tokyo) in 2009, “Delicious Art in SATOYAMA,” (Matsudai NOUBUTAI, Niigata) in 2010, “Kan-hikari expo,” (Entsuu-ji Temple, Nijo Castle, Kyoto) in 2010, “ZIPANGU,” (Nihonbashi Takashimaya, Osaka Takashimaya, Kyoto Takashimaya), “The new form of Japanese lacquer,” (The Museum of Arts and Crafts, Itami, Hyogo) and “Lacquer Festival, Aizu ～Yell for Tohoku ～,” (Aizu-Wakamatsu city, Kitakata city, Fukushima) in 2011.
Someya produces his art works by applying dry-lacquer technique, building the base with clay, covering its surface with lacquer and borrowing motifs from the figure of objects or livings.
The artist’s daily life and interests, letters, patterns and manga images are drawn on the surface by Nishiki-e, one of the decorating techniques of lacquer craft.
The decorations of Someya’s works entertain the viewes’ eyes, incorporating the traditional lacquer techniques, styles, and his modern sensitivity. Through creation of works which makes the artist to be confronted with the strict restriction of time and environment the medium forces, he understands the possibility that the medium possesses, and have been executing a varied characterized works. His works embody a various objects, such as Lacquer bowl, sushi tray, bathroom chair, household Shinto shelf, rice, human’s hair, branch, accessory and etc., which shows Someya’s unique esthetic sense and playful spirit. By all the means of exhibiting space, exhibiting way, titles of the works and nuance of words, he presents his very own originality under the coherent theme of “decoration”. He says he has been trying to keep the feeling of “playing” with lacquer while making works these days. He has been more conscious of human body through the moist touch of lacquer like that of smooth skin, and he says he started to perceive spots, scars and wrinkles on skin as part of decorations. The new works indicates round line of female bodies and intertwining bodies, which gives sensual impression to the works.
He titled the exhibition “For the longing to be inside-out”.

Someya is also going to be participated in ZIPANGU, showing from 28th September – 10th October, 2011 at Kyoto Takashimaya.
この度イムラアートギャラリー京都では「染谷聡展 うらがえりたいのために」を開催いたします。
染谷は今春、京都市立芸術大学大学院 博士課程を満期で退学。2009年には東京国立近代美術館工芸館での「現代工芸への視点─装飾の力」、2010年は「里山のおいしい美術」（まつだい農舞台）、京都の圓通寺・二条城で開催された「観○光」、2011年は「ZIPANGU展−31人の気鋭作家が切り拓く現代日本のアートシーン。」、「漆展--新い漆のかたち--」（伊丹市立工芸センター）、「会津・漆の芸術祭2011 〜東北へのエール〜」に参加するなど、注目を集めています。
染谷の作品の特徴は、"もの"（いきもの等）をモチーフに、原型を粘土で作り、乾漆技法を用いて制作しています。また、作品の表面には、作家自身の興味や日常が、文字、文様、マンガなどが、漆の加飾技法の一つである、蒔絵によって描かれています。
伝統ある漆芸装飾の様式美、伝統技法を取り入れながら、現代的な感覚で描かれる漆の加飾は、観る者の目を楽しませます。制作行程で、時間的、環境的制約を余儀なくされる漆と向き合う中で、素材が持つ様々な可能性、性質を理解し、ここ数年で多様な作品を制作してきました。
塗椀、寿司桶、風呂椅子、神棚、米、人毛、枝、アクセサリーなど、様々なものが作品に取り込まれ、染谷の独特な美意識、遊び心が感じられます。
展示空間、展示方法、作品タイトル、語感、それら全てにおいて「かざる」という一貫したテーマの下、漆という素材を通じ、染谷らしいオリジナリティを生み出しています。
最近は「漆とあそぶ」という感覚を特に大事にしていると言います。
そのなかで、漆が持つ、しっとりとした、瑞々しい皮膚のような質感から、人体をより意識するようになり、皮膚に残る、しみや傷、皺といった痕跡をも加飾の一部と捉え、それらも一種の「かざり」と考えるようになったと言います。新作では、丸みを帯びた女性の体の曲線、重なりあう体の部位が表れ、そこに漆の艶が加わり、官能的な印象を受けます。
今回の展覧会タイトルは「うらがえりたいのために」。
「作品を作る行為が、自分自身をペロンと裏返し、自分の内部に探し物をしているような感じ、になれば楽しそう。でも、今はまだまだ何もわからない途中なので"のために"です。」 染谷聡
