We are pleased to present a solo exhibition of Shiro Tsujimura “Tuchi” (Soil).
A potter living with fire and soil, choosing Mama-cho, Nara prefecture for his hermitage in distance from the city, Shiro Tsujimura is one of the most leading and representative ceramic artists of today whose works are highly appreciated for their profound taste of natural ash glaze and expressive style.
It is not an exaggeration to call his life style is his art work itself. Once entered into his house you may be enchanted with the dignified and heavy sliding door, jet-black beams and floor, carelessly plastered mud walls, tea room and anteroom,which is built by the artist himself. The guests learn the true value of Tsujimura’s ceramic produced with his broadminded nature through the heartfelt reception of the artist and his family with his Saki cups.
Being a self-taught artist, Tsujimura established his innovative and bold way of execution without a teacher. Generally admitted to be prolific, the artist creates numerous works ever year augmenting their maturity by revealing them to rain and wind, which is resulted in the deep surface expression as if embracing the grand nature of Nara.
His creativity also flourishes in his powerful calligraphy and paintings on which he has been putting much effort and significance for long term.
With the first show in 7 years happening in Kyoto, we are going to showcase Shiro Tsujimura’s works from different genres at 3 venues, tea ceremony utensils at “Tessaido” which is one of the most established antiques shops in Kyoto,
dishes and cups at “Kou” whose re-opening at a new shop coincides with this exhibition, and calligraphy and paintings at “imura art gallery” which has been vigorously representing contemporary Japanese art.
2012年11月17日（土）より「辻村史朗「土」展」を開催致します。
奈良県水間町、美しき人里離れたこの地を庵に選び、火と土と共に生きる陶人、辻村史朗。自然釉の深い味わいと力強い存在感溢れる作風が特徴の、 今日本を最も代表する陶芸家です。
氏のライフスタイルは全てが辻村史朗作品といっても過言ではありません。 重厚で分厚い引き戸、炭の煙でいぶされた黒光りする柱や床、無造作に塗り込められた土壁。家屋、茶室、寄り付き、 全て辻村氏本人が運び込んだ材木を使い自ら施工。それだけでも心奪われてしまいます。そして招かれた客人たちは 氏とその家族からの心のこもったもてなしを受け、盃を交わすのです。よって心が通い豪放磊落な辻村氏の作りだす器 の意味を知るのです。
師をもたず、独自の方法で作陶を極 めた辻村史朗の制作スタイルは、非常に豪快で奔放です。自他ともに認める 多作で、年に数えきれない作品を作り出します。またそれらは雨風に晒されながら自然と風合いを増していき、奈良の大自然をそのまま閉じ込めたかのような、奥深い景色を作り出すのです。
また、作陶だけにとどまらず書、絵画と幅広い作品製作にも長年力を注ぎ続け、その作風は大変力強く圧巻であります。辻村史朗の茶器・食器・絵画と書の展覧会を3会場にて同時開催致致します。 それぞれに力を注いできた作品をそれぞれの異なった設えでどうかお楽しみください。
京都随一の骨董通である古門前に店を構える「てっさい堂」にて茶器、古門前から新しいスペースへ移り、本展が こけら落しとなる「tessaido 昂」にて食器、丸太町から現代アートを発信し続ける「imura art gallery」にて絵画・書。
京都での個展の開催は7年ぶりとなる大変貴重なこの機会、是非ともご高覧下さい。

[ 作家略歴 ]
1947 奈良に生まれる。
1965 画家を志し、東京へ上京。井戸茶碗に魅せられ作陶を決意。
1969 作陶を始める。
1970 奈良・水間に家を建てる。
1993 英国・ウエスト デボンに築窯。
