2015 is an anniversary year for Rimpa, one of the Japanese classical painting school.
Rimpa is known as decorative and brightly colored paintings. For this memorial year, imura art gallery is glad to present the collaborative exhibition, Taro Yamamoto (b.1974,Japan) and Unsodo (a woodcut print books company), attempting to show 'Heisei Rimpa'.

Yamamoto defines his works “Nippon-ga” instead of “Nihonga”* so that his works clearly different from ones of conventional Japanese paintings.
‘Nippon-ga’ is distinguished by Yamamoto :
A painting that demonstrates present state of Japan in the clearest way,
A painting that induces laughter with Japanese localized sense of humor, and
A painting created by Japanese traditional method.

Also classicism and modern motifs are mingled in his paintings by the method of traditional Japanese painting. We can find his humorous sense from the select of unique motifs combined with famous subjects of classical paintings. He is highly regarded in Japan and abroad as an heir to Rimpa who appears only one in a century.

Yamamoto learned classical art such as Japanese painting, No-play, and classic dance, creating his uniqueness by these cultural accomplishments. After that, he established a strong presence in Heisei-Rimpa artists through the group exhibition ‘Kamisaka Sekka’ in New South Wales Museum in Sydney (2012), the group exhibition in Minneapolis Museum in U.S., (2013) and many exhibitions in Japan. Currently, he is an associate professor at Akita University of Arts and presents lots of exhibitions and collaborative works.

Unsodo, established in 1891, publishes handmaid woodblock printed books with Japanese traditional technique. Notably, prints of Sekka Kamisaka(a modern inheritor of Rimpa) are created by them. For this exhibition, Yamamoto and Unsodo collaborate to create a special woodcut print, Shingou-Suminoezu.

Yamamoto’s solo exhibition ‘Coga Calling’ is also holding in Takashimaya Osaka from 25th February till 3rd March and in Takashimaya.
