Imura art gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition by Hideki Kimura and Sadaharu Horio. The show features thrilling paintings by Kimura and Horio, who have both been active in contemporary art for over four decades, but have very different practices.

Hideki Kimura has long been at the forefront of the art scene. After a spectacular debut as a printmaker in the 1970s, he went on to win numerous awards at international print exhibitions, many while still in his twenties. Rather than producing editions, Kimura fuses printmaking with painting to produce one-of-a-kind experimental works that each bring a fresh surprise. This exhibition presents works from his Squeegeeing Acrylic on Canvas series from 1998 to the present.

Sadaharu Horio began his art career in the 1960s as a member of the Gutai Art Association, one of the leading movements in postwar Japanese art. He has continued to develop his ideas as an artist ever since, despite holding an ordinary job until his retirement in 1998. In particular, Horio has worked actively on his Atarimae-no-koto (“A Matter of Course”) theme on a daily basis since 1985, presenting over a hundred exhibitions and performances a year. And for more than a decade, he has been the subject of a remarkable amount of international attention. This show features his Atarimae-no-koto 3kg Painting, one of his recent attempts at juryo kaiga (“weight painting”), in which he joins together 3 kilograms’ worth of iron fragments.

Although Hideki Kimura and Sadaharu Horio at first seem to focus on unrelated fields, viewing their works through a port that integrates multiple perspectives brings them together, revealing a new image of the world. This is an excellent opportunity to discover the experimental “painting” of these dynamic contemporary artists.
