Imura art gallery is pleased to announce its first solo exhibition in four years by the wood carving artist, Fumio Yamazaki.
Fumio Yamazaki’s consistent practice involves sculpting distinctive figures from a single block of wood, a technique known as ichiboku-zukuri, and then adding color with watercolors. The resulting sculptures seem somewhat bizarre at first glance. Staring into space and beaming peace and tranquility, the sculptures exude a demigod-like presence that transcends any kind of species the earth has to offer. Whether their shapes are distorted or neat and orderly, these statues are presented front and center in a positive way, accepting all. How they are received depends on the viewer’s frame of mind, which produces a sense of being questioned.
Created through long hours of self-reflection by the artist, these statues work their way into our hearts, charming us with their simple forms and the unique warmth of wood carving.
This exhibition is an opportunity to discover Fumio Yamazaki’s ‘silent neighbors’ with their loquacious stares.

Hearing the chime from the nearby shipyard signaling 5:00 PM, I realized that I’d spent another whole day just sitting in front of something that I’d started and got no further. I was lost again. It’s a bad habit, but this sort of time is important to me. When I wander down an unfamiliar road and sense the face of something strange peeking out from the edge,capturing that vision will make my work come alive.

この度、イムラアートギャラリーでは4年ぶりとなる、木彫家・山﨑史生の個展を開催いたします。
山﨑の制作スタイルは一貫しており、一本の木から掘り出す「一木造り」技法を用いて像の全身を彫刻した後、水彩絵具で彩色を施しています。
一見すると、異形のもの、と言える山﨑の作品。虚空を見つめ閑寂さを湛えたような彼らは、この世のあらゆる生命種族を超越した半神的存在のようでもあります。整ったものも、歪とされるものも全て受け入れて、肯定的に皆の現前に差し出された立像。この存在の受け取り方は、その時のあなたの心次第、と、まるで己のあり方を問われているように感じます。
長い時間をかけ、作家が作家自身とも向き合い完成された立像は、木彫ならではの温もりを持ち合わせ、純朴な佇まいで、私たちの心に寄り添ってくれることでしょう。
饒舌な眼差しを持った「静かな隣人」。

午後5時を知らせるチャイムの音が近所の造船所から聞こえくる。今日も朝からただ造りかけの作品の前に座っていた。また道を見失っている。悪いクセだが、今の自分には必要な時間だとも思える。迷い込んだ道の端から顔を覗かせる得体が知れぬ何か、その様なモノを取り籠んだ時、作品は動き出す。
