EXHIBITION

Starting Thursday, November 6, Imura Art Gallery will present "Schwarz-Weiß," a group exhibition featuring works by Kengo Kito, Takehito Koganezawa, Kohei Nawa, and Kyoko Murase.

The exhibition title, "Schwarz-Weiß," is the German term for "black/white." Each of the participating artists has lived or spent time in Germany, and this German title serves as a thematic undercurrent for the exhibition. In keeping with the title, the works on display are primarily monochrome.

While in Japanese, the term for monochrome is typically expressed as "white-black" (*shiro-kuro*), in German—much like in English—it is phrased as "black-white" (*Schwarz-Weiß*). For Germans, the word *Schwarz* (black) carries a special significance; it is not merely a color, but often functions in a metaphorical sense. For instance, the black in the German national flag is said to represent the oppression and suffering of the past. Conversely, the *Schwarzwald*—or "Black Forest"—in southwestern Germany is regarded by many Germans as a place of return, as well as a site that inspires a sense of awe.

The themes of "black-white" and "Germany" bring to mind Wim Wenders’ 1974 film *Alice in the Cities*, which was shot in monochrome. Heavily influenced by the work of Yasujiro Ozu, the film unfolds quietly within a world of black, white, and shades of gray. Furthermore, for Gerhard Richter—known for his "Gray Paintings," a series that explores the potential of monochrome—"gray" serves as a central theme, often interpreted as a symbol of "nothingness." Richter himself has described gray as an "unconditional painting"—a form of art untainted by any specific ideology.

The acoustic complexity capable of being contained within a single, self-sufficient sound—and the Japanese sensibility that perceives such a refined, singular sound—gave rise to the unique concept of *ma* (interval/space). This silent *ma* is, in fact, understood not as an emptiness, but as a space teeming with countless sounds that stand in counterpoint to that complex, singular sound.
—Toru Takemitsu, *Collected Writings of Toru Takemitsu, Vol. 1*, Shinchosha, 2000, p. 200 (originally published in 1971).

Just as Takemitsu described the silent *ma* as a space teeming with countless sounds, black and white need not be viewed as opposing phenomena; one might instead perceive white as the "void" existing amidst the myriad particles that constitute black. Alternatively, there are artists—such as Gerhard Richter—who depict "gray"—the infinite gradation stretching between black and white—as a symbol of "nothingness." Black and white, light and shadow, night and morning: this exhibition presents works that, through the unique interpretations of each artist, capture the nuances found within the continuous gradations that exist between these poles—the subtle, interstitial spaces evoked by the monochrome.
