Imura Art Gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition “I want to hold your hand” by Nihonga artist Kaori Watanabe.

Since obtaining her Master of Fine Arts from Kyoto Saga University of Arts, Kaori Watanabe (born 1984 in Shizuoka Prefecture) has been a prolific artist, participating in many art exhibitions. From 2009, she has also been involved in the restoration of important cultural assets and national treasures throughout the world, and she reflects in her own work the techniques and knowledge of classical paintings that she has gained while surveying and conserving art and producing replicas for donation. Using as the main motif human subjects meticulously rendered through well-crafted line drawings on silk canvases, the world view of Watanabe that is constructed from the artist’s modern-day life presents us with new possibilities, while at the same time doing a wonderful job of carrying on the classical painting tradition. The exhibition title, “I want to hold your hand,” reflects the artist’s wish to create new visual imagery about gender and culture, sewn together as if holding hands, based on Watanabe’s personal creative theme of all-inclusiveness. The exhibition provides an opportunity to view the fruits of Kaori Watanabe’s tireless efforts producing contemporary Nihonga.

My hope is that people view the works in this solo exhibition as a storyboard for a fictional cult movie. A storyboard illustrates the main scenes in a visual work, such as a movie. It is created to allow staff to gain a shared understanding of the visuals and worldview of the work.

There are many movies in the world that were never completed, and there is something particularly fascinating about film projects that are suddenly stopped halfway through, with storyboards left abandoned, like Alejandro Jodorowsky’s Dune. for example. Being unfinished, they are unrestrained by limitations in the vast realm of the imagination.

I would like viewers to connect each individual scene, enjoying the unique aspect of this image storyboard with which you experience disorientation as you try to connect fragmentary scenes that do not necessarily have a continuation, unlike a regular storyboard.

It is also fun to establish a backstory that this ‘movie project’ suddenly died because of too much absurdity and problems—a soaring budget, a director who has gone missing, accidents with actors, and a string of illnesses.

この度、イムラアートギャラリーでは日本画家・渡邊佳織 個展「抱きしめたい」を開催いたします。 渡邊佳織は1984年静岡生まれ。京都嵯峨芸術大学の修士課程(芸術研究科)を修了後、数多く の美術展に参加すると同時に、2009年から現在まで国内外の重要文化財や国宝の修復事業 にも携わり調査保存、模写寄進などを通じて古典絵画の技法や知識を自身の作品に還元しな がら作品を制作しています。絹本にしっかりとした線描で緻密に描かれた人物をメインモチー フに渡邊の現代生活から構築された世界観は、伝統的な古典絵画を全うに継承しながらも、新 たな可能性をみせてくれます。本展では、あらゆるものを抱合(including)したいという渡邊の 個人的な制作テーマをもとに、ジェンダーや文化について手を繋ぐように縫合して新たなビジ ュアルを作り出せたら̶そんな思いを込めて「抱きしめたい」というタイトルを掲げています。 渡邊佳織の飽くなき現代日本画への挑戦をぜひご高覧くださいませ。

今回の個展に展示される作品は「架空のカルト映画のイメージボード」としてご覧いただきたく 存じます。イメージボードとは、映画などの映像作品の主要な場面をイラスト化したものです。 「ストーリーボード」とも呼ばれ、スタッフ間で作品のビジュアルや世界観を共有するために制 作されます。世界には数多の完成出来なかった映画がありますが、イメージボードが残された まま頓挫した映画はとくに興味深く感じます。(ホドロフスキー監督の「DUNE」など)それらは未完であったが故に想像のなかでの広がりに限りがないからです。絵コンテとは違う、イメージボ ード特有の「必ずしも連続しない断片的な場面」どうしを、戸惑い楽しみながら各自繋いでいた だきたいです。「あまりの荒唐無稽さとトラブルの多さ(嵩む予算、監督の失踪、出演者の事故や 病気の連続)により頓挫した映画」などといった裏設定を据えていただくのも一興です。
