Imura art gallery is pleased to present its first solo exhibition by Masanori Umeda. Born in 1941, Masanori Umeda graduated from Kuwasawa Design School in Tokyo, then relocated to Italy, where he collaborated with Ettore Sottsass as a consultant designer for Olivetti. In 1981 he joined in the activities of the Memphis Group (Memphis Milano), which was led by Sottsass. In 1979, he had returned to Japan, where he established Umeda Design Studio. Perhaps best known for his furniture designs, Umeda’s work as a designer covers a wide range of fields, earning him recognition through a number of prestigious awards.
In Umeda’s distinctive creative world view, the rhetoric of his design is “a construction of the context with Japanese image and concept supported by Western creative language.” [i] In other words, it is Japanese in spirit, combined with Western learning. “What I say as “‘Japanese” ’ is mostly quotation of traditional sense of aesthticismaestheticism, which is acceded in our contemporary life, such as the taste of the elegant simplicity and quietness in Tea Ceremony, the transition of seasons, the subtle and profound beauty of nature, the Oriental cosmos of “Zen”, the primitive native religion and folktales, the mind and norm of military arts, the spirit of “haiku” poets which adores nature, the richness and gorgeousness of “Kabuki” plays, the splendid traditional crafts, the sacred rituals, the excitement and fascination of festivals, the eroticism of “Ukiyo-e” prints and gay quarter, and so on. The motifs are infinite.” [ii] Such Japanese aestheticism has also been a constant source of inspiration for Umeda’s design work.
The collection of the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto includes an example of Tawaraya created by Umeda for Memphis. International appreciation of his work is currently growing, as evidenced by the M+ art museum that opened in Hong Kong in 2021 acquiring 147 Umeda works for its collection. The exhibition at imura art gallery includes two new chairs, PEONY and SAKURA, presented in public for the first time. These two works visualize the concept of living in harmony with nature, providing an insight into the unceasing source behind Masanori Umeda’s sense of design.

イムラアートギャラリーでは、初めてとなる梅田正徳の個展を開催いたします。梅田正徳は、1941年生まれ、桑沢デザイン研究所リビングデザイン科を卒業後、イタリアに渡り、オリベッティ社のコンサルタントデザイナーとして、エットレ・ソットサスと協働します。 81年からは、ソットサスの主宰するメンフィス・グループの活動にも参加しました。日本には79年に帰国してウメダデザインスタジオを設立、家具のデザインにとどまらず幅広くデザイナーとして活躍し、数々の賞を受賞しています。
「日本的なイメージやコンセプトを西欧の造形言語によって文脈を構築すること」[i] で梅田の和魂洋才ともいえる独創的な世界観は表現されています。「日本的なるモノとは主として現代生活に継承されている伝統的美意識の引用であり、それらは茶道のワビ、サビの世界、四季のうつろい、幽玄なる自然美、禅の東洋的宇宙観、プリミティブな土着信仰と民話、武道の精神性と規範、花鳥風月を愛する俳人の心、絢爛豪華な歌舞伎、華麗な伝統工芸、神聖な儀式、祭りの興奮と陶酔、そして浮世絵や遊郭のエロティシズムなどそのモチーフは数限りない。」[ii] こうした日本的美意識は、常に梅田のデザインのインスピレーションの源でもありました。
京都国立近代美術館には、メンフィスのために制作された「タワラヤ」が収蔵されています。また、香港に昨年オープンした美術館M+には、147点の作品が買い上げられコレクションされており、海外での注目も高まっています。本展では、最新作の椅子「PEONY」と「SAKURA」の2点を発表いたします。自然との共生をイメージして制作された作品から、梅田の尽きることのないデザインの源泉の一端を感じていただければと思います。
